Ptosis Repair

Droopy Eyelid Surgery

What is Ptosis?

Ptosis or droopy eyelid is also referred to as blepharoptosis. One or both of the upper eyelids may droop slightly or cover the entire pupil. This drooping of the upper eyelid can cause a tired or sleepy appearance, facial asymmetry, and reduced vision. Ptosis is caused by a separation of the tendon that attaches to the muscle that lifts the eyelid. Eyelid ptosis repair corrects drooping upper eyelids and repositions the eyelid to the appropriate level. Ptosis repair will refresh your look with a vibrant and more youthful appearance.

Ptosis Causes

Ptosis is caused by weakness of the muscle that lifts the eyelid or damage to the nerves that control that muscle. Ptosis can be caused by congenital factors, aging, trauma or neurological or muscular disorders.

The Procedure

Dr. Lo will customize your eyelid ptosis repair and reposition your eyelid to the appropriate level by correcting and tightening the muscles. While this is often confused with an upper eyelid blepharoplasty, no skin is removed in this procedure. Small incisions are placed to camouflage the appearance of scars and are nearly imperceptible after healing. Depending on the individual case, the repair will be either internal, external, or a sling technique. Ptosis eyelid repair procedures can be done with local anesthesia or light sedation. The procedure takes about an hour to perform.

Ptosis Recovery

In the first few days after your surgery, the operated eyelid will be swollen and stiffer than normal. You may ice the treated area and it is recommended to keep your head elevated. You’ll be expected to apply a topical ointment and lubricated drops as directed. Swelling and bruising can last for up 7-10 days with no strenuous activity or exercise for 1-week. Most patients feel comfortable returning to daily activities within the first few days and returning to work within 7-10 days depending on comfort level.

Confidence Restored

Droopy eyelids can convey the misleading impression that a person is tired or uninterested, or even unwell which can have a detrimental effect on their confidence. Dr. Lo aims to restore confidence by surgically raising the eyelids to give a more youthful, alert appearance.
