What causes bags under your eyes?
Dark circles under the eyes, puffy eye bags, and baggy lower eyelids can be due to genetics or the natural aging process. Lower eyelid bags are caused by a combination lower lid fat pad bulging, loss of volume of the face, and excessive skin and swelling. Bulging of the lid fat pads happens when the tissues around the eye weaken and the fat pads protrude causing eye bags. Loss of volume and the general descent of the midface and cheeks can cause the dark circles or shadows under the eye. The excess of thin, crepey skin is caused by loss of collagen and elastin which happens as we age.

What is a Lower Eyelid Lift?
Lower eyelid blepharoplasty, or eye bag surgery, is a procedure that helps restore and refresh your lower eyelids, smooth and eliminate under eye bags, reduce and fill dark circles, and improve wrinkles and crepey skin under and in the corners of the eyes, while creating a natural transition from lower eyelid to cheek.
The Lower Eyelid Lift Procedure
Dr. Lo will carefully evaluate each patient. The best candidate will be in good physical and mental health, have realistic expectations of the lower eye bag surgery, understand all risks involved, and be willing to follow pre-operative and post-operative instructions. All of our procedures are performed at our in-office surgical suite giving patients a relaxed and private surgical experience. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty procedures can be done with local anesthesia only, but patients may select light sedation if they prefer. During the lower eyelid lift procedure, Dr. Lo will make an incision inside the eyelid or below the eyelashes on the lower eyelid and will remove excess fat. He may also excise loose skin and tighten any underlying muscles. The result is a rejuvenated lower eyelid and brighter look to the face. The lower eyelid blepharoplasty procedure is safe, quick and can typically takes one to two hours, with additional procedures adding more time.

What to expect after the Lower Eyelid procedure
Because there is no general anesthesia used, recovery is more comfortable for patients. You’ll be expected to rest with your head elevated for a week, and apply a topical ointment as directed. Swelling and bruising can last for up to 7-14 days with no strenuous activity or exercise for 2-weeks. Sutures are removed within the first week of surgery and the scar on the lower lid is hidden by your eyelashes. Most patients feel comfortable returning to daily activities within the first 5-7 days and returning to work within 1-2 weeks.
