Plastic comes from the Greek, plastikos, which means to shape or to mold. Plastic surgery involves reshaping the body either for cosmetic or reconstructive reasons. Cosmetic surgery is done to rejuvenate and improve one’s appearance while reconstructive surgery is done to repair defects caused by birth, trauma, or disease.
Dr. Lo is an expert in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face. His most common procedures include eyelid, brow, and facelifts. He reconstructs many defects as a result of cancer, and also has vast experience in liposuction of the body.
Dr. Lo will carefully evaluate each patient. The best candidate will be in good physical and mental health, have realistic expectations of the surgery, understand all risks involved, and be willing to follow pre- and post-operative instructions.
Dr. Lo will discuss with you which type of anesthesia is appropriate according to the length and difficulty of the procedure, the patient’s health, and the patient’s preference. It will range from local anesthesia, local anesthesia with intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia. Patients seem to heal with fewer problems when using local anesthesia.
Any surgery comes with very real risks. Dr. Lo will discuss the specific risks of the procedure during the consultation. Some of the most common are pain, bleeding, and infection. Fortunately, most risks and potential problems are rare.
Recovery time depends primarily on the procedure and how quickly you heal. Many patients are able to resume light activity within 3-5 days and moderate activity after 7-10 days. Some more invasive surgeries do require a longer down time.
To maximize healing, Dr. Lo recommends having excellent nutrition with adequate rest and exercise. Dr. Lo also recommends vitamin C and folic acid for healing. Aspirin and other blood thinners are stopped 2-3 weeks prior to surgery. Coumadin should only be stopped with your doctor’s advice and guidance. Smoking is a detriment to healing and you should abstain from all forms of nicotine.
Because Dr. Lo assess each patient individually, he cannot determine which procedures you will need without a consultation. Therefore, it is difficult to give a specific quote prior to having a consultation with Dr. Lo. For other questions, please feel free to contact our office.
